Local reaction to Petraeus resignation mixed

Reno Gazette-Journal, 10 November 2012

“Like most people, I am incredibly disappointed by his actions,” said Kirk Lippold, former commander of the U.S.S. Cole and who lives in Carson City. “It just makes us realize no matter how great a person can be, they are human beings that occasionally make mistakes.”  Lippold said he admired Petraeus for being accountable for his actions and resigning.  “Not many politicians have the moral courage to do that,” he said.  Lippold said as a member of the intelligence community, Petraeus “could not afford to have any moral failings that could potentially be used to compromise his integrity.” (Read More)

Commander of USS Cole visits Grand Rapids

WZZM, 8 June 2012 - A retired Naval commander says inaction by two presidents contributed to the attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001.
Commander Kirk Lippold was in charge of the U.S.S. Cole when it was attacked by the terror group Al Qaeda 11 months before 9/11.

Lippold is in Grand Rapids tonight for a speaking engagement. He has just written a book about the incident called "Front Burner." He says the story of his crewmates has never been told. Lippold says 17 sailors were killed and 36 wounded in the attack in October of 2000.

"You had one administration that did nothing and essentially walked away wrapped up an investigation and did nothing. And you had a new administration come in that did nothing as well. Consequently eleven months later we had 9/11," said Commander Lippold.

He believes the war on terror can be won if the military is allowed  to do its job without political interference from Washington.

A Q&A with Kirk Lippold, commander of the USS Cole

The Dallas Morning News, 7 June 2012 - On Oct. 12, 2000, the commanding officer of the USS Cole, Kirk Lippold, felt the 8,400-ton Navy destroyer shudder beneath him.

Al-Qaeda suicide bombers had blown an enormous hole in the side of the ship as it was refueling in a Yemeni port. It was al-Qaeda’s first direct attack on the United States, resulting in 17 deaths and 37 injuries.

Now – after 9/11, “the war on terror,” and Osama bin Laden’s death – Lippold, who is retired from the Navy, has turned his experiences into a memoir, Front Burner: Al Qaeda’s Attack on the USS Cole.

Lippold, in town for a speech and book signing at the Omni Dallas Hotel, was interviewed by Staff Writer Talia Richman about the Cole attack, the future of counterterrorism, and steps Dallas can take to stay safe. Here are excerpts:

Are there specific moments from the USS Cole attack that are still fresh in your memory?

The first was within minutes of the hit. I went to my safe, grabbed my 9mm handgun, and loaded it. I had only two thoughts: defend my ship and defend my crew. I didn’t know at that point if the ship was going to be boarded or if there was going to be a follow-up attack.

Alexandria Veteran Featured Speaker at Rolling Thunder Rally

The Connection Newspaper, 1 June 2012 - An estimated one million riders roared in procession from the Pentagon to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial May 27 in the 25th anniversary Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom in remembrance of American POWs and service members still missing in action.

“This is my way of helping remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we as a nation enjoy,” said Alexandria's Kirk Lippold, commander of the USS Cole when it was attacked Oct. 12, 2000. “It is also to honor all those who continue to choose a life of consequence to serve our nation.”

#Lippold, a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was a featured speaker on the National Mall following the conclusion of the ride.

#“I've been participating in Rolling Thunder since 2001,” said Lippold, author of the just-released “Front Burner” about Al-Qaeda's attack on the USS Cole. “It's one small way to honor those who choose to serve in the face of conflict.” (Read More)

Key al-Qaeda operative confirmed dead

One News Now, 10 May 2012 - The former commander of the USS Cole is pleased that a key al-Qaeda terrorist tied to the attack on his ship was taken out in a recent drone strike.

"He was actually supposed to film the attack to create a recruiting video for al-Qaeda and was sitting filming from the safe house window up in the hills overlooking the harbor where al-Qaeda had been observing Navy ships going in for about 18 months," Lippold details. "He was a key guy. He wasn't just a guy out there with a video camera; he was a guy following the attack on the USS Cole that began to grow his intelligence contacts within al-Qaeda, grow his capability and actually was a major member of the al-Qaeda on the Arabian Peninsula, plotting to kill more Americans." 9/11 judge has handled tough cases before

Miami Herald, 28 April 2012 - Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, blamed Bush administration holdouts for “exploiting ambiguities in President Obama’s executive order as a strategy to undercut the president’s unequivocal promise to shut down Guantánamo.” Former USS Cole commander Kirk S. Lippold countered that the judge had delivered “a victory for the 17 families of the sailors who lost their lives on the USS Cole over eight years ago.” (Read More)

Daily Press, 17 April 2012 - The book offers "a minute-by-minute account of how we kept the ship afloat and got the wounded to shore," said Lippold, who was attending the Sea-Air-Space defense trade show as part of a publicity tour. He noted that of the 33 wounded sailors carried off the ship in the first day of the attack, 32 survived.

"Initially a lot of people didn't want to talk about it. It took me nine years to reach a point in my life when I could relive back on paper the attacks and the horrible aftermath." (Read More)

Cole victims win suit, may never see money

Navy Times, 14 April 2012 - But Hall and retired Cmdr. Kirk Lippold, who commanded the Cole at the time of the attack, said the federal government may be the biggest obstacle to recovering damages, over the concern that such cases would undermine U.S. diplomacy.

“I think what you’re going to see is the continuation, consistent across numerous administrations, where they are going to block the payment to those families,” said Lippold, whose memoir of the attack, “Front Burner,” was released Tuesday. (Read More)

Kirk Lippold, USS Cole Commander, Pens 'Front Burner: Al Qaeda's Attack on the USS Cole'

Huffington Post, 11 April 2012  - "I will always live with the fact that my ship was attacked ... on my watch," he said when asked to assess the blame. "Do I feel guilty? No. Am I accountable for what happened to my ship? Absolutely. Am I responsible for what happened to my ship? No. Bin Laden is the one who is responsible for that attack."

Lippold writes that intelligence and military failures contributed to the tragedy, as well as an inability to recognize the warning signs of the 1998 bombings of two U.S. embassies in East Africa.

"We were put in the wrong place at the wrong time with inadequate training and inadequate intelligence," he said. (Read More)

Twelve years later, USS Cole commander recalls deadly attack
The Daily Caller, 6 April 2012 - On Oct. 12, 2000 the USS Cole was bombed by al-Qaida while at port in Yemen. Almost 12 years later, Commander Kirk Lippold, the man in charge of the ship that day, has written a book telling the story of what happened. Front Burner: Al Qaeda's Attack on the USS Cole is scheduled to be released April 10.

“At the moment of the explosion, the entire ship is lifted up into the air, and within seconds I knew we’d been attacked,” Lippold recounted in a phone interview with The Daily Caller. “I was sitting in my cabin working at my desk. I went back and opened the safe where I kept the keys to the missiles and the torpedoes and the guns, and I pulled out a 9mm pistol, took a deep breath and went outside on the ship.”

“I didn’t know if we were going to be boarded. … All I knew was I had chambered a round, I had two clips of ammunition. … The only thing I could think of [was] I might be facing my destiny, but I’m not leaving a single round in the chamber. The only two things that mattered to me in the moment were protecting my crew and protecting my ship.” (Read more)
